Safer, Smarter and Faster Lifting This article was written by Katherine Crichton and published in the April 2007 issue of Manufacturers' Monthly. Cranes increase efficiency This article was published in the March/April 2007 issue of MHD - Supply Chain Solutions magazine. When many people hear the word crane the image that comes to mind is a very large piece of equipment used at a construction site or dock area to lift tens or even hundreds of tonnes. The trend in the manufacturing industry, however, is towards the use of workstation cranes. these are much smaller and can be in a monorail, gantry or jib configuration, depending on the area the crane needs to cover. Factories enjoy lighter side of cranes This article was written by Sarah Colyer and published in the February 2007 issue of Factory Equipment News (FEN). The logic of using a cumbersome overhead crane to lift a 30kg load is no logic at all, but manual lifting is an irresponsible alternative. Thankfully, smaller workstation cranes are just starting to occupy 'a place of their own' in the market, a number of crane companies recently testified. Dawn McFarlane, managing director of Bomac Engineering told FEN manufacturers are increasingly interested in smaller workstation cranes. "It used to be that the thinking that if we need to lift 30kg then why not have a crane that can lift 1000kg? This is like using a hammer to crack an egg when a spoon works better," she explained.
